UROLIFT

UroLift Q & A

Why is an enlarged prostate gland a problem?

Men’s prostates can enlarge as they get older. It’s not a sign of cancer or even particularly dangerous to their health, but can it cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms. A man with an enlarged prostate may experience:

  • A frequent need to urinate

  • Dribbling at the end of urination

  • Difficulty starting urination

  • Increased nighttime urination

  • Weak urine stream

  • A stream that starts and stops

  • Inability to completely empty the bladder

You may also have bladder, urinary tract, or kidney problems as a result of a benign enlargement of the prostate.

What is the UroLift?

The UroLift is a revolutionary surgical procedure during which a small telescope-like instrument is passed along the urethra. A small implant is placed into the prostate, retracting part of the gland to relieve pressure on the urethra and ease urinary symptoms.

This could be done under local anesthesia in the office and 90% of men go home the same day without the need of a catheter.

Who is a candidate for the UroLift?

Men who have a benign enlarged prostate and don’t want to or can’t take medication are well-suited for the surgery. Medication isn’t always effective in treating the issues associated with the prostate, so if your medicine hasn’t relieved your symptoms, you may be a candidate for UroLift.

Men who don’t want the sexual side effects associated with medications or the recovery of conventional surgical procedures.

What is recovery like after the UroLift procedure?

Dr. Seskin gives you a comprehensive post-treatment care guide. You can expect him to tell you to avoid heavy lifting and straining, but that light exercise is acceptable.

You’ll want to eat plenty of fiber and stay hydrated so you don’t get constipated. Minimize caffeine, carbonated drinks, and alcohol intake, as these may irritate your bladder. You’ll need to plan to take just a few days off work as well.
