What is interstitial cystitis?

Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that can cause a painful sensation of intense pressure in the bladder and pelvic region that can range from mild to debilitating. The other common symptom of interstitial cystitis is severe urinary frequency. The person suffering from interstitial cystitis can have one of these symptoms or both simultaneously.

Your bladder sends a signal to your brain when it’s full to let it know it’s time to urinate. But when you have interstitial cystitis, the bladder can send these signals far more often than is necessary. So you end up needing to urinate much more often, but when you do, you urinate less than a normal trip to the restroom would require.

Both men and women can experience interstitial cystitis. It is often seen in conjunction with other autoimmune diseases, such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, etc.

What are the symptoms of interstitial cystitis?

Interstitial cystitis can be recognized by the following symptoms:

  • Pain between your anus and the genitals

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • A persistent and urgent need to urinate

  • Frequent urination, especially in small amounts

  • Pain as your bladder fills and relief as it empties

  • Pain during sexual intercourse

While frequent urination can have many causes, interstitial cystitis can be among the most extreme, as some people can urinate every hour throughout the day. Sometimes symptoms can periodically disappear, or they can get worse for a short time, especially because of something like a urinary tract infection.

How is interstitial cystitis treated?
