ED Q & A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to attain or sustain an erection firm enough for sex. Having occasional erection problems is normal, but persistent erectile dysfunction can cause stress on you and on your relationship. Erectile dysfunction can also be a symptom of other health problems, such as heart disease and multiple sclerosis.

Luckily, there are many treatment options available, and most people with ED see symptoms disappear when they find an option that works for them.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Sexual arousal is a complex process, and it involves many different organs and health systems in a man’s body. This means there are many things that can go wrong, so there can be a variety of causes of ED. The most common physical causes include:

  • Heart disease

  • Hypertension or high cholesterol

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Metabolic syndrome

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Peyronie’s disease

There are also a number of prescription medications that can cause erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, using tobacco or abusing alcohol or other substances can lead to ED.

Erectile dysfunction is also commonly caused by psychological factors. Anything from problems in your relationship to depression and anxiety can make sexual activity difficult. Worse still, ED can compound as you place more and more pressure on yourself to perform, and it can create a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break.

What are my treatment options for erectile dysfunction?

First, Dr. Seskin will make sure you are being adequately treated for any existing conditions and confirm that your ED is not a sign of something more serious. Once he’s confident that you’re otherwise healthy, Dr. Seskin can help you find the best possible solution.

Many men respond well to popular oral medications, such as sildenafil and tadalafil. These are usually taken before sexual activity and last several hours, but there are a variety of dosages and options.

Dr. Seskin also offers pulse-wave therapy. Pulse-wave therapy uses acoustic waves to encourage blood flow and the creation of new blood vessels. It has been used to treat everything from kidney stones to heart disease. The process is quick and usually painless, and over time, it can improve your body’s ability to attain an erection.
